It is that time of the year again where many of the key players & bloggers in the wellness industry start to make their lists of the trends that they predict will become popular in 2017.
Here is 10 that we believe you might find interesting …
1. WOMENS ONLY COMMUNAL GATHERING ARE THE NEW WAVE IN WELLNESS
The feminist movement has seen explosive growth recently as the dialogue between womanhood and wellness begins to manifest. Women are now meeting and supporting one another as a means to maintain their well-being, acknowledging that community and connecting with others as a great way they can care for themselves. Women’s circles are trending because of this open-minded approach toward communal healing. It is a place where women can become empowered as well as create mentorships that can be super beneficial to their self care.
Our Comment: With so many more women returning to the workplace a dedicated space where they can come together and support one another on many different levels may be just what we need to lift that glass ceiling and at the same time give them access to a space for selfcare so they can shine!
2. MEDICINAL MUSHROOMS ARE THE NEXT STAPLE SUPERFOOD
The healing power of mushrooms is certainly nothing new. Used medicinally in Russia, China, and Japan for centuries, mushrooms are at the base of many modern pharmaceuticals, from penicillin to anticancer drugs and the first statin treatments. New processes have also made it easier to extract the benefits of mushrooms into easily consumed, therapeutically effective powdered extracts that can be used in cooking, smoothies & other drinks.
Our Comment: Raw foodist David Wolfe has been touting the huge health benefits of the reishi mushroom for many years. It now looks like it is finally taking it’s rightful place as key ingredient in the every day diet.
3. MATCHA TEA
Matcha Tea is the champion of green tea and uses the young leaves of green tea that have a higher concentration of antioxidants. This means matcha provides a more potent amount of both caffeine and antioxidants than regular green tea and is also rich in polyphenols, which have been tied to protection against heart disease and cancer as well as better blood sugar regulation, blood pressure reduction and anti-aging benefits.
Our Comment: As match comes in a powder form it is very versatile & can be used in smoothies, general cooking as well as of course its real purpose as a tea. For more information check out The Healthy Chef (Teresa Cutter) @ www.thehealthychef.com
4. SOUND THERAPY
During sound therapy, a participant typically lies on a yoga mat, pillow and/or bolster while gongs, crystal singing bowls and meditation bowls are played by the sound healer …. Think of it as a 1 hour session of Leesa playing her meditation bowl whilst you lie in savasna. The experience is incredibly relaxing, and the sounds transports your mind and takes it on a sensory journey – similar to the way a movie soundtrack or music by mozart does.
Our Comment: As the whole body is made up of vibrational waves, the body naturally responds to sounds. If the right sound waves are experienced, it is proven that the body & mind will become more relaxed & “grounded”. It is mega relaxing and transports your mind and body to a place of freedom.
5. EMOTIONAL FREEDOM TECHNIQUES (EFT) TAPPING
This essentially is emotional acupuncture without any needles. It’s a self-help technique in which you use your fingers to tap on certain acupuncture points located along energy pathways of the body, or meridians. It is a noninvasive technique that is used to help reduce stress, anxiety, depression, phobias, PTSD and pain and prevent food cravings.
Our Comment: Whilst we are not overly familiar with the process, marketing & motivational gurus Tony Robbins & Brendon Burchard utilise a form of this to help change their mental state and direct their focus before going to present on stage.
6. MEDITATION & MINDFULNESS ARE COMING TO YOU
There are so many more distractions in our lives now resulting in people seeming busier than ever. We’ve all heard again and again that meditation will help us relax and “be present.” Solutions are popping up all the time from apps (eg Headspace), drop in meditation studios (US only at the moment) & Celebrity endorsements.
Our Comment: We totally agree … our very own program is currently in development. However for those interested in trying something in the interim, 1 Giant Mind is very good!!
7. AVOCADO OIL IS THE NEW CURE-ALL OIL!
Coconut oil has been increasing in popularity for years and is now known for its copious health benefits. It’s attracted some skepticism, too, but now there’s another miracle oil trending in healthy-living circles. Avocado Oil … apparently it is now surging in popularity on Google Trends and is expected to spike even higher in 2017.
Our Comment: Avocado oil has many health benefits, including lowering blood pressure and helping relieve arthritis and psoriasis as well as being great for the skin. It is also readily available in supermarkets and has a very light subtle flavour making it great for salad dressings.
8. DOPE BECOMES SERIOUSLY COMMERCIAL
Retail brands now want to be your “cannabis dealer”. Cannabis infused foods, beauty products and other consumer goods are growing in number; and whilst they won’t make you “high” the benefits are said to be very therapeutic!! These Cannabis based products use non-psychoactive extracts from the plant—most notably, cannabidiol or CBD. (The psychoactive THC content is also below the US legal limit of .03 percent). A growing body of scientific research shows CBD has the power to reduce anxiety and stress, lower inflammation, relax the body and mind, and subtly lift the mood,”
Our Comment: With stress, anxiety and depression being a growing concern to the community, these therapeutic products will no doubt be a “go to” for many people. Obviously coupled with Yoga and Meditation they may well be a healthier option than their synthetic drug alternatives.
9. PLANT PROTEIN IS GOING MAINSTREAM
Plant protein in the form of Pea and Hemp are popping up everywhere from smoothies, nutrition bars, potato chips & trendy restaurants. No longer a niche market for vegans or athletes, plant based food is increasing in popularity with research showing a large number of households adopting the “Meatless Monday” approach.
Our Comment: Long gone is the idea that protein is best sourced from animal products. In order to have a sustainable future we need to look at other food options and plant based protein makes a lot of sense. It is easy to store & use and I believe it will be a big hit especially with health conscious exercise enthusiasts.
10. “WOO WOO” WELLNESS IS GROWING IN POPULARITY
Crystals, cupping, reiki & energy healing are now part of many peoples “life-enhancing” routines; and will continue to be another modality people are willing to try in order to help heal themselves.
Our Comment: Whilst not new to many of us wellness advocates as our lives continue to be hectic and laced with stress, these modalities that were once thought of as “quackery” will be become more mainstream and perhaps even sourced as a first option rather than the “poor cousin”!!
